Day Four: A Thursday Thirteen Throwback

Due to a rough day at work today, I’m doing a little bit of self-removal from anything too brain stressing this evening.  It’s a good evening for some Patriots Football, stitching, and attempts to destress a bit before I get back to the insanity in the morning.  I don’t want to miss my post for the project, though, so I went wandering on the internet to see if an old blogging community still was active – and it seems to be still going!  I participated in this weekly project for quite a while many years ago.  Perhaps it’s time to get back into Thursday Thirteen as an easy blogger groove.

Without further delay, my Thirteen Songs that are on frequent Spotify replay these days:

  1. Take On Me, a-Ha (acoustic version) – I heard this for the first time when I saw Deadpool 2 earlier this year, and I’m absolutely in love with it.  It’s a simple, love song that morphs into something beautifully intimate when it’s stripped down.
  2. This Is Me, The Greatest Showman soundtrack – Imperfect is beautiful, and this song brings the power to everyone trying to embrace those imperfections
  3. Big Love, Fleetwood Mac (Lindsay Buckingham solo version) – The remake that’s far better than the original, in my opinion.  The original is a bit of a holy mess of all things that are both wonderful and bad about 1980s music.  The solo version released on The Dance is raw, almost angry.  And Buckingham’s guitar work is fantastic.
  4. A Different Corner, George Michael – I first heard this song about twelve years ago, although it dates back to 1986.  George Michael’s voice has always been one of my favorites in pop.  His voice is so bright and clear that it projects any emotion he wishes to convey.  The desperation and confusion about a relationship that sounds so incredibly one sided here has gorgeous lyrics, and Michael’s voice in his just-pre-Faith days is amazing.  One of his underrated hits.
  5. Fishin’ In The Dark, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – because I grew up in Montana in the 1980s/early 1990s.  It’s obligatory high school memory lane music.  Twangy, brings me back to my roots, and is probably completely incomprehensible to any of my friends who didn’t grow up there.  This is just one of those songs I have a guilty pleasure listening to and singing with in my absolutely horrible alto voice.
  6. You Win Again, Bee Gees – This song never really made waves over here in the USA, but I remember when it came out and liked it from the get go.  It’s catchy, and until the little falsetto trills begin after the second chorus, listeners may not even realize who it is singing.  It’s a good drive commute sing-along song.
  7. Rainbow, Sia – Max was recently in a fairly heavy rotation of the My Little Pony movie.  This song ends the movie, and it just got stuck in my head.  No other reason.  🙂
  8. When October Goes, Barry Manilow – this is a seasonal thing for me while driving around in the evening in New England in October.  It’s old-school crooner music.
  9. Sunchyme, Dario G – Electronic music is another one of my guilty pleasures.  This one has stumbled on and off my replay list for years.  I love how it builds, until suddenly Dream Academy’s “Life in a Northern Town” refrain busts out amid the steel drum band.
  10. X-Files theme (UNKLE Version) – The movie may have been pretty crappy, but I have loved this version of the main X-Files theme since it was released.  The original is iconic.  This one has a sense of wonder about it.  My ears always go to the cello/viola undertone.
  11. Get Lucky, Daft Punk – I almost always have something by Daft Punk on the list.  It rotates between songs until I overplay for a while, and then a different one goes into the rotation.  Right now Get Lucky is back on the list for some good drive grooving.
  12. The Dance, Kings of the River – Garth Brooks doesn’t have his songs on Spotify, so remakes rule the playlists.  This one’s my preferred for one of my all-time favorite songs.
  13. Where the Streets Have No Name, U2 – I will never be sick of this song.  It is arguably my favorite of all time.  It just gets me moving.  It’s been on virtually any playlist, mix tape, mix CD, etc. I’ve made since Joshua Tree came out.
